Norwegian band Electric High have just released a new single called Weeping Gods. The song criticizes the concept of sinning and “confessing” just to be forgiven and to sin or do whatever horrid wrongs we wanna do once again. The song has a special sound mix of sludge and stoner and all the riffs sound stellar and well-produced.

The song begins with a short intro with two chords and the main riff begins quickly after that, the main riff is the song’s big superstar and main character here. I couldn’t help but be reminded by early Black Sabbath and a bit of Electric Wizard due to the crispy guitar tone and the bendy nature of the riff, but there’s also a bit of Mastodon here and there due to the bass and drums and the way the song progresses from that riff section to slow-paced verses.

The verses showcase the vocalist’s ability to sing in a cool breathy voice that somehow still maintains intonation and timbre, which brings another influence here, reminding me of Marilyn Manson. The powerful bass and drums guide the riff into the beautiful bridge/solo section with Sabbath-y effects and vintage 70s rock guitar pedals, making the song truly stick to its 70s promise and stay tied to its genre origins.

There’s nothing not to love about Weeping Gods. From the religious criticism in the lyrics to the larger-than-life riffs and the 70s inspired sound, you will feel like you put all your favorite sludge and stoner bands together in the same studio and they made a song with a modern scope and very unique vocalist. To me, this song succeeds in creating an atmosphere that feels like a dark evil church where evil gets condoned and sinners wash their sins and do it over and over again. 10/10 song for me, and this riff is gonna keep playing in my head for days and days from now.
