Tornado of Mistakes is the latest single by solo artist and vocalist Jay Luke, and it is pretty much the emotional rollercoaster that its name suggests. Having played, written, and toured since 2003, Jay Luke knows exactly how to play the listener’s heartstrings with his well-thought vocal lines and relatable lyrics.
This new song begins with the sound of a cool breeze blowing, preluding to an upcoming riff storm. Once those riffs start, you feel a strong presence of rhythm guitars, bass and drums playing along with an emotional lead guitar line that instantly reminded me of Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia, except I was immediately struck by Jay’s deep vocals and the rich warmth of his tone. It’s like a gothic metal vocalist came to do a melodic/classic heavy metal song and all the instruments just kneel before him.
As the verse starts we see the full extent of the power of the chord progression that they made from this song, and how it can segue and flow from the verse to the chorus while paving the path for the lead guitars and vocals in impeccable harmony. Although the chorus is big and sounds larger than the rest of the song, it has a strong main layer of vocals (the backing layers don’t feel cramped up or crowded) so that you can decipher the words and feel the beautiful emotion they carry within them.
Last but not least, as if the melodic guitar work wasn’t already mindblowing on its own, the second chorus was followed by an epic bridge section that has a killer guitar solo. The drums and rhythm guitars go really mad behind it, and with the final drum break leading to the last chorus, we got to feel the state of unrest and indeed the “tornado of mistakes” that Jay Luke has successfully incorporated with his intriguing lyrics and emotional instrumentation. If you love the heart of pure hard rock, heavy metal, and especially if you love hearing them go back to their melodic roots and riff-driven nature, then this I promise you this song will meet your expectations, and then some.
