The duo Andrew Bayuk (guitar/bass) and Anisah Alyahya (piano/cello) are back with their artistic project Venusia. Taking a leap of faith, they dropped their own cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” on the 11th of October, 2022, mixing their diverse influences and showing their love for Bowie. So, let’s see how it went.
Venusia’s choice to cover “The Man Who Sold The World” shows a lot of character and belief in their direction and musicianship. Keeping the song’s original signature guitar melody while using an extra groovy enjoyable bassline and heart-hitting cello, Venusia managed to add a deeper emotional layer to their version. The vocal delivery and beautiful dreamy harmonies helped create a big theatrical sound, that gave “The Man Who Sold The World” a dramatic twist that kept its core alive while making it sound like it’s their own.
Choosing to cover one of the most famous covers of all time is a risky choice, but Venusia knew how to smartly approach this. Their cover shows a great sense of melody and a keen eye for detail, as they carefully and skillfully managed to keep things fresh and interesting without overdoing or messing with the song’s original flow, it felt like looking to “The Man Who Sold The World” from a different angle and that’s the true essence of covering from my POV. Looking forward to more from Venusia, keep on rocking guys, cheers!
