“Take A Dive” is the debut single from Calgary-based folk rockers The Dust Collectors. The song was inspired by Irish immigrants who made it to America in the 1920s, and with lyrics like these, you can’t get any more true to the genre and its roots. The arrangement of the song is based around a stompy beat and a simple chord progression that adds a sea-shanty vibe to the song as well. The main instruments that the songs revolve around are a guitar (which I presume to be a Steelcase because of its tone), a bass and a kick drum. The accent plays a major role in delivering the charming atmosphere that the song gives off, it’s a mix of Canadian, Irish, and stereotypical southern cowboy, all of which are true to the story and era the song is telling. The song is short (just under 3 minutes) and brief because it cares about telling the story, without having filler sections or adding more choruses. The seamless way the melodies and the singing match with one another makes it hard to tell if the lyrics/vocal lines were written first or the chord progression. Speaking of the chord progression, its power and impact come from how deceptively simple it is. It is sufficient and does all it needs to be the storytelling masterpiece that it is.
