Painted Friends’s latest single is a truly effective and beautifully made piece on indie pop that carries precious midwestern vibes with jangly guitar arpeggios, lazy, hazy vocals, and immediately entrancing hooks.
Based in Detroit, Michigan, Painted Friends is a band, and their second single of 2024 is ‘My Heart, Your Love’. As songwriter Jeremy McWhorter puts it, this song is a love song between himself and the world. He wrote it to express his appreciation for existing, and this notion alone makes ‘My Heart, Your Love’ exceptionally unique.
The music is gorgeously produced. The song sounds tight, and the mix is roomy with just enough space to make the sound intimate but not claustrophobic, and the terrific acoustic guitars sound sublime, double-tracked, and hard-panned. The level of detail in the mix points to a band with a particular sound in their mind and to a standard of quality that’s refreshing, to say the least.
Also boasting restrained songwriting, ‘My Heart, Your Love’ does not have an expansive, intricate composition. In the contrary, the song’s few, familiar chords are easy on the ears, and they are utilized in such a way that makes each of the song’s sections memorable, with a tear-jerking hook that immediately grabs the attention. The solo has unforgettable phrases, flittering and chirping, wonderfully melodic and understated, and with a tone that is dialed-in just right with its light overdrive.
‘My Heart, Your Love’ is quite an achievement. A sweet notion drives this beautifully written and beautifully sounding song that’s warm, lush, and artistically calculated. Painted Friends have unquestionably made themselves a new fan who’ll be waiting impatiently for every new release.
