“I never hated anyone, but then there was you,” sings lead singer, Alison Freed of LA-based Royal She band in “My Ex”, encompassing the main gist of what it means to break up with a toxic ex-lover.

With a brand new album titled “Befores and Afters” coming soon in 2025, “My Ex” is an appetizer to tide yourself over with until the big guns are exposed.

The breakup anthem features the multi-instrumentalist Alexandria Reyes’ vibrant sound and the soft vocals of Freed, which turns to a growl mid-song before switching into a rap verse that puts the final nail in the coffin. Versatility at its best!

The outro features the echoing electric guitar chords that sound eerie, as if you’re witnessing a scene from a horror movie. That’s when Freed seeks help by singing “maybe you can help, pretty lady” as she looks for love somewhere else.

Royal She rose to fame with their cover of Billie Eilish’s “My Girl” before gaining momentum with their single “Rollercoaster”. The band cites inspiration from bands like PVRIS and Paramore, which birthed a unique blend of rock, with pop and electronic vibes.

Stream the song on October 4th on all platforms.
