Gus Defelice is an Italian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who loves to mix heavy energetic elements with technical and mindful ones in his brand of death metal. His latest single is called “Luring Depths”, and I dig it so much.
The first riff/main riff consists of a galloping segment and a power chord segment, each with a different flavor thanks to the different drum beats, so it’s kinda asking you to pay attention. It partly reminds me of the modern era of Obituary, but it also has some touches of Kataklysm and Decapitated in it…and that’s probably due to the modern and clean production.
The second riff that plays was also a killer one. It was a simple riff and didn’t overstay its welcome, and we heard more of that archetypal death metal chainsaw sound in the guitar tone and in the way he picks.
The third tremolo picking riff is good and showed us how Gus can take the song’s heaviness and intensity to the extremes.
I also loved the first lick of the solo so much because it fits the song and I wish it would have been played again as an outro or something because I loved it so much.
All in all, this is a song that brings the classic OSDM chainsaw sound with the modern and bouncy one, giving every kind of fan or death metal lover something to enjoy and remember after they first hear the song.
