James Mastro, the Hoboken-based rock and Americana singer-songwriter-guitarist, has been a beloved figure in the music scene for decades. Most notably known for his work with The Bongos and The Health & Happiness Show, Mastro has taken a step towards the forefront with his debut solo album, “Dawn of a New Error.” And what an impressive step it is.
The album, set to release on Feb. 21,2024 via MPress Records, is a 11-track masterpiece that showcases Mastro’s talent as a songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. Produced by Tony Shanahan (Patti Smith’s bassist and producer) at Hobo Sound and recorded and mixed by Grammy nominee James Frazee, “Dawn of a New Error” is a dynamic blend of Americana, rock, and Gospel influences.
The album kicks off with the infectious “Right Words, Wrong Song” featuring guest vocals from Mastro’s longtime friend and collaborator, Ian Hunter. The track is a perfect introduction to the album, with its upbeat tempo, catchy chorus, and stellar guitar work from Mastro. With Hunter’s signature gritty vocals, the song sets the tone for the rest of the album.
The next track, “My god,” is a standout with its poignant lyrics and engaging melody. Mastro’s vocals shine on this track, conveying emotion and sincerity as he sings about faith in oneself and others. The song features a driving bass line from Shanahan and a powerful guitar solo from Mastro, solidifying it as a highlight of the album.
The hopeful “Three Words” has a nostalgic feel reminiscent of classic rock, with its driving bass. Hunter’s guest vocals add depth to the track, as he and Mastro’s voices blend perfectly together. “Everywhere” is another standout track, with its twangy Americana vibe and hauntingly beautiful lyrics.
Listeners will find themselves singing along to the catchy chorus of “Someday Someone Will Turn Your Head Around.” The song combines Mastro’s Springsteen-esque vocals with Gospel influences, creating an uplifting and optimistic track. The gospel group’s powerful vocals add a soulful touch, while the guitar work and keys bring a familiar rock feel.
The album takes a reflective turn with “Here Beside Me,” a beautiful ballad that showcases Mastro’s songwriting skills. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a past love, while the music creates a bittersweet atmosphere. “The Face of the Sun,” another track featuring Hunter’s guest vocals, is a hopeful and uplifting tune. The lyrics deliver a powerful message of resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
The playful “Gangster Baby” is a standout track with its clever lyrics and upbeat tempo. Mastro’s vocals have a flirtatious edge to them, and the song features an infectious guitar riff. The album closes with “River Runs Forever,” an introspective track that flows through lost loves and musings on the end of days.
“Dawn of a New Error” is a triumph for James Mastro, showcasing his versatility and talent as a musician. The album is a seamless blend of rock, Americana, and Gospel influences, with heartfelt lyrics and powerful vocals.
