I am an 80s kid and I love the whole 80s aesthetic…
…whether it’s the washed out bright colored t-shirts…
…the puma sneakers…
…the steady drum beats…
…the big guitar riffs…
…the soaring hairspray metal vocals…
…it’s where and when I came into the world…and whatever takes me back in time, even for a little while, I enjoy it and live in these moments…that is why when Roisin O’Hagan released her first ever cover and it was for A Flock Of Seagulls’ “I Ran”…I can’t tell you how much that took me back in time where there were no problems…nothing was difficult…everything seemed so clear and pure…
Roisin, 24, is a rising star from Essex, UK…she started doing music since…actually 12…
She joined Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters) on tour, performed for Whispering Bob Harris
(BBC Radio 2) and BBC Introducing and was named a Fender Undiscovered Artist finalist.
…and she’s just starting out…
If you are like me in any way, you’ll be transported instantly to the time you wish never ended…and I personally think that this is one of the best things art can do to you in general…is to alter reality for you and take you to places, whether new, old, good or bad…but if it moves you emotionally…then the artist has mastered his craft…and this is exactly what Roising did here.
Roisin took “I Ran” and not only did she capture the nostalgic feeling and the emotional energy, but she put her modern twist on it too…the mesmerizing and hypnotic vocals add so much to the whole nostalgic feeling, it actually feels that Roisin was allowing the spirit of 80s awesome female singers into her body and she literally embodied the spirit of the 80s.
The modification of the lead guitar solo is also more melodic this time around…which I really prefer…
Also, I like that Roisin took the speed of the song a notch down…that is making it a much more enjoyable and steadier ride.
Roisin…thank you for this trip you took us on back to the 80s, we wish you all the best in life and can’t wait to see what you have next for us…it would be great if you did another 80s cover like this one…I don’t know…maybe something from the works of Journey…” Separate Ways” maybe?… I’m just saying…
Keep rockin’
Cheers!
