Canadian singer/songwriter and pianist Matthew Presidente‘s latest single, “Hundreds or Fives,” is a stunning display of his musical talents and emotional depth. Released on March 8th, this love ballad serves as the second single from his upcoming album, following the success of his previous single “A-List,” which topped the Qreviews chart for over four weeks. Matthew debuted with his album “The World Is Watching You” in 2003. Since then he has released a diverse range of music, with six albums, various singles and about 13 live recorded EPs under his belt.

In “Hundreds or Fives,” Matthew explores the power of love to overcome life’s challenges, stating “I’ve stayed grounded through difficult times thanks to the love of my partner, my family and my friends. Although the road has been bumpy, there is laughter along the way and the love continues to endure, whether my pockets are full of $100’s or $5’s.”

From the outset, the song’s soundscape reminded me of Queen, with a 6/8 groove featuring a piano line that adds a shuffle and continuous feel, complemented by arpeggiating guitars that give it depth and texture. While the dynamic drums and strings provide a grounding and powerful accompaniment that propels the song forward. Halfway through the track, the piano shifts into a new progression, accompanied by an E.Piano melodious lick that introduces a mood shift. The backing vocals singing “Hundreds or fives,” melodic bass line, and dynamic drum build up to an explosive pre-chorus that features hard-hitting drums, piano, and overdrive guitar power chords.
