The latest release from New York-based musician Josh Tepper is the Kabbalist anthem “Guide Me Meron“, and it is a wonderful modern-sounding anthem connecting the singer with his ancestry and beliefs. He was inspired to write this song after the passing of his spiritual grandparents, and one of the elements strengthening the concept is the juxtaposition of these religious teachings with anthemic modern pop rock/indie rock like this.
The song begins with a short piano intro and Josh’s soft vocals. His soft airy tone makes me anticipate how he’s got more range and depth hidden in his voice, and as he pushes more air and lets the higher parts of his range loose I realize how much natural twang and resonance his beautiful timbre has. The high tenor range that he possesses makes his transitions into his second passages easy and seamless while staying emotional and powerful rather than being shouty or strained. It seems like Josh has years and years of experience and technique perfection behind him.
As far as instrumentation goes, the song has that ‘less is more’ kind of composition. The guitars sound soft and play some clean lines during the verses and they start to get bigger with the louder drums during the chorus. Such an arrangement made the chorus way more anthemic and memorable enough to fit into the spiritual spectacle Josh wanted to create and successfully did.
With that being said, emotions of this caliber couldn’t have had any clearer way to represent them than this combination upbeat rock anthem with a bright vocal tone that Josh chose to have. It successfully transmits that sense of wanting to be heard and guided through life. This is a successful and emotionally honest piece that deserves your time and open heart when you give it a listen.
