Math rock infused with neo soul and the most delightful flair of latin harmony and classical melody, alongside gripping solos and terrific riffs, all promise that Bob Saganas’s latest single is an immediately arresting one. ‘Grey Matter’ is an explosive instrumental that’s equally cerebral and emotional.
Bob Saganas is a medical pathologist and a musician who composes and is quite extremely handy with guitars and bass. He hails from Limassol, Cyprus, and is joined by drummer Achilles Papagrigoriou. Together, the duo recorded the gorgeously rich-sounding single in Ocean Studio Norway, tracking the real drums alongside Saganas’s 8-string guitar that plays the Polyphia-inspired math rock riffs as if they were nothing.
Inspired by his studies of the brain’s grey matter, Saganas reached the idea of composing such a cerebrally involved piece that it equally engages the brain with its twisting performances and uncanny rhythms. Now would be a fitting time to start talking about Saganas’ show-stopping guitar skills. Whether he’s laying down technically challenging riffs that are quite complex or shredding sublime, Van Halen-esque solos, Saganas’s guitar playing is something beautiful and inspiring to witness.
The gorgeous composition of ‘Grey Matter’ is the cherry on top. The energizing single has latin and classical vibes in its chords and melodic composition, making for one whole and fulfilling listen, and for a short instrumental that’s only a little over 2 minutes in length, ‘Grey Matter’ is a sublime experience by a powerhouse musician and guitarist.
