It’s sunset…

You’re driving your neon car, on the neon highway…

The radio volume is on 11…

…the road doesn’t end, and you feel free…

This is how I felt when I closed my eyes while listening to Seven Layer Piano Cakes latest single “Endgame”…the instrumental version.

Let me first tell you a bit about Seven Layer Piano Cakes…

The heart, soul and mind behind it is Justin Hoyt, an L.A. based attorney and law professor.

Justin is also a classically trained pianist and…the voice of Seven Layer Piano Cakes.

“Endgame” is a dark synth duet featuring VRL (Valerie Rose Lohman) as co-vocalist.

iT was co-written, co-produced, and mixed by Hoyt’s longtime collaborator, Ian Stahl (Kingsize Soundlabs), and mastered by the legendary GRAMMY award winning engineer Steven Fallone at Sterling Sound.

Justin had a very cool approach to releasing this song, and not just this one…actually, “Endgame” is the last of a trilogy called the “Chess Trilogy”…hence the name “Endgame”

This “Chess Trilogy” started out with “Novel Opening”, followed by “Middlegame”…and now he’s finishing it off with “Endgame”…I love it when the artists drag you into a world that they created even before you experience their art…and that of its own is art, it’s a fuller experience and a bigger world for you to get sucked into.

So…on paper, “Endgame” has all the epic elements that would make it an awesome experience…so does it live up to the hype? Spoiler alert…yes it does…and a bit more.

Let’s jump into the “Endgame”…

First of all, Justin released 2 versions of “Endgame”…one is a song, the other is an instrumental version, and today we will be talking about the instrumental version.

Whenever I hear the word ‘instrumental’, I’m hooked, so the premise already got me…

…now let me now take you back to the very beginning of this article, about what the song made me feel and experience.

It feels like you are on a highway, driving into the sunset, everything is 16 bit, the colors are oversaturated…it’s nostalgic, it’s modern, it moves you, it’s chill…Justin really got the audience in a very unique place, emotionally. This is something that you have to experience for you to really take it all in.

For me, the experience was just perfect…I could visualize my emotions completely.

The song starts out with a filtered sounding build up…till it gets clear, then takes you on that 16 bit neon highway…and into the verse.

…till you reach the first landmark along that road, the chorus…catchy melodies and catchy sounding synths steals the show, awesome sounds, just excellent choice.

In this mix you also get ambient-post-rock guitar melodies and a little solo…that sucked me in even more…

Two thirds in the song, the song starts to build up in a very synth-pop-cinematic kind of way, it’s very unique…and it keeps building up till everything just explodes into tiny dust particles and transcends our physical world…and the neon car goes into the sunset…maybe reaching its destination…maybe not…we don’t know, but we enjoyed every bit of the journey.

“Endgame” is a very catchy synth-pop instrumental track that will keep you hitting the repeat button till it’s broken.

Justin, we want to wish you all the luck in the world, you took us on a journey that we want everyone to be part of, and embark on this journey into the sunset.

Looking forward to experiencing more and more of your art, we love it. We are fans.

Cheers!
