Debuting with the single ‘Jeffrey’, Irish four-piece Empathy unveils a dark and brooding alt-rock sound, taking heavy riffs, fierce drums and gritty vocals.
The band began between vocalist Dean Nolan and drummer Adam McCarthy as a songwriting outlet. After recruiting bassist Sam Sweetman and guitarist Dan Rheinisch, they found themselves ready to take on the live scene, building their reputation to support fellow up-and-comers and headline shows across the Irish circuit.
‘Jeffrey’ is an intention-setting flurry of raw performance and thoughtful storytelling. The band explode from a flurry of riffs and shrieking distortion into a firm verse, dissecting the mentality of a killer. The choruses punch out, embracing the internal conflict and then crying out for help, their emotions sliding from end to end of the spectrum. A punchy, piercing and energising first outing.
“Jeffrey is an interpretation of the internal struggles and moral wranglings of one of the most well-known serial killers of the 20th century,” the band explain. “We wrote the song to investigate Dahmer’s descent from ideation to reasoning; and eventually to his indulgent actions, and relishing in his vile nature.”
