On my second listening to Clay Joule, it was apparent to me that he consistently chooses at least one instrument to make prominent in the mix, drawing a considerable amount of attention to it and to what it brings to the table.
The Secaucus, New Jersey based Clay Joule is a singer and songwriter who writes pop music with a variety of leanings to multiple directions. Having listened to his patriotic hymn Realm, back in January, heavily featuring bagpipes that efficiently amplified the nationalistic grandeur the song was trying to convey, I am glad to report that on his latest single, titled Drifters, Joule takes his soulful vocals to a wholly different place, this time far closer to home than with Scottish bagpipes.
Drifters is a blistering blues in minor, and what’s in focus is an electric guitar that bleeds one charismatic lick after the other. Featuring the voice of Elisa Mammoliti, the song’s atmospheres are characterful and colorful, Clay Joule’s delivers are as heartfelt as always, and the song’s traditional blues sound is easy to get absorbed into, making for an easy and fun listen that’s loaded with meaning and drama.
Drifters is one more song in Clay Joule’s shapeshifting catalog. From ethnic patriotic anthems to charismatic delta blues, Clay Joule has got it all covered.
