Dramatic, melancholic, and quirky, Silver Magpie’s return is indeed a special offering. ‘Dickens’ comes after a long silence from the Mexican artist, and we are happy to report that it was well worth the wait.
Silver Magpie is the project of Mexican singer and songwriter Jesus Gutirrez, based in Guadalajara. Gutirrez’s sound in Silver Magpie is morose. Dramatic, often with a sense of potent darkness, and after spending 2 years in radio silence to hone his sound, Gutirrez’s sound now is even more concentrated. ‘Dickens’ is uncategorizable, maybe leaning most towards chamber pop with the unabashedly dark chord progression and artsy arrangement featuring wailing atmospherics alongside meandering melodies.
‘Dickens’ is the first single off Silver Magpie’s upcoming EP. Born out of significant life events that Gutirrez went through while being hooked on Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, Gutirrez has made sure to state that ‘Dickens’ is “not a hopeless song, rather a song that is a quest for clarity, with the narrator seeking to restore hope and honesty in the world”. A statement that clarifies a lot about this artful song, also manages to drive home just how dark the sound is.
‘Dickens’ is dark and delightful. A tasteful piece of storytelling with a musical sound that is impressionistic and unforgettable. A beautifully somber piece of alternative pop that sure made us impatient to hear the rest of Silver Magpie’s upcoming EP.
