2012 Miss Texas, 2013 Miss USA, and soon to be one of the strongest ladies in country rock and pop rock, Whitney Miller has just kicked off her music career with two amazing singles: “Ready Or Not” and “Black and Blue”, the latter of which caught my attention. The song is highly catchy and WHIT’s vocals are part country, part pop, and 100% rock n roll. Think of mid 2000s P!nk or Kelly Clarkson and think of both their music styles combined, and Black and Blue is what you get.
The song begins right away with some backing vocal lines and a country style guitar progression. I love how the percussion ascends slowly during the verse to pave the way for the stronger pre-chorus and chorus coming after them. The first verse immediately shows us how Whitney has the amazing ability to follow the beat with a groovy and raspy tone, and a dark voice color.
The chorus and the change from chest to head voice was the part that particularly impressed me. The second verse has heavier drums, and after the second chorus we get another surprise which is the guitar solo. It ends with one last chorus that beautiful closes this masterpiece.
At the end of the song I felt like I just want more and more of WHIT’s raspy overdriven voice, as her technique is flawless and her approach to singing is sexy and (pun intended) witty. If you’re looking for a light and upbeat pop song that’s guitar-based and has powerful and organic instrumentals, then this is it.
