In this article I’ll try and break whatever laws of writing an article and use a whole bunch of Japanese words just to get the feel of how weird, exciting and unique this band is. So let’s start, Hajime!

The band hails from Tokyo, Japan. It was founded in 2010, and the concept of forming the band is to “Blend” Metal music with J-Pop which stands for Japanese Pop, plus the band was initially formed as a subunit of the female idol group Sakura Gakuin, which literally means “Cherry Blossom Academy”. And as a little FYI about that group, here’s what Wikipedia says about the concept behind Sakura Gakuin:

“Sakura Gakuin employs a line-up changing system with members joining and leaving. Since the group is conceived as consisting of girls up to junior high school, when a member graduates from junior high, she “graduates” from Sakura Gakuin too (i.e. leaves the group).”

Back to our main topic, so the concept behind the band formation is quite a (◎_◎;) thing, but also very “Sugoi” and “Subarashi” o(≧▽≦)o, (the past 2 words mean “wonderful” and “great”). Now let’s meet up with the main members of the band.

Suzuka Nakamoto (a.k.a SU-METAL), born December 20, 1997. A Japanese idol, singer and model. She is represented by the talent agency Amuse Inc. and has been a member of three musical groups formed by the company: Karen Girl’s, Sakura Gakuin and BABYMETAL. Her role in the band is clean vocals and dance.

Moa Kikuchi (a.k.a MOA-METAL), born July 4, 1999. A Japanese idol, singer and model. She is represented by the talent agency Amuse Inc. She is a member of the girl group Sakura Gakuin and the heavy metal group BABYMETAL. Her role in the band is clean vocals, screams and dance.

Yui Mizuno (a.k.a YUI-METAL), born June 20, 1999. A Japanese idol, singer and model. She is represented by the talent agency Amuse Inc. She is a member of the girl group Sakura Gakuin and the heavy metal group BABYMETAL. Her role in the band is clean vocals, screams and dance.

Now since you have met the girls, and saw how “Kawaii” (=^-ω-^=) they are (the word means “cute” if you know Jack about Japanese!). Here’s something that would spice things up, when forming the band the girls had No Idea what-so-ever about Metal music…….⊙▂⊙ “Nande?” (Getting tired of the translation, but this word would mean “why!”). Which I would answer with “How the hell would I know!”; even YUI-METAL before joining the band said that she was scared of Metal music, but later she said, “It’s fun and I see why people enjoy it so much! I still don’t completely understand it, but I’m interested.” Bless you child, bless you.

Now for how the band would actually sound like and what type of metal they sound like, and right off the bat I would say, “They sound like BABYMETAL!”, which means that they are so unique with their style of vocaling and how the band –who are the actual heroes of this project– play. Generally the band is categorized under the following genres: Death Metal, Heavy Metal and J-Pop, but through their Singles and their Debut album –which will be discussed in a later article– they incorporated a lot in their music that would make them go from one genre to another, one track after the other. Also they have introduced other genres that are not Metal in their music such as Dubstep and –believe it or not– Hip Hop! That’s right folks, Goddamn Hip Hop! But as a last verdict of what exactly they are playing and doing with their music, I would give it the following genre “J-Pop Metal”.

For their latest news, they are currently on a world tour to show everyone what they have to offer, they started off with France, then Germany and now they are in the U.K in one of the famous event in Metal world, Sonisphere. Sharing the stage with huge metal bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Dream Theater, Metallica and many other bands, they even took pictures with them, just to give you a few examples of the photos:

So what do we make out of this? That Metal still survives by always showing its ability to accept more genres into its realm and transforms any kind of music into Metal. BABYMETAL is a big proof of this and they are getting recognized with their own music and performance. Make sure you check out the band’s official links and music. Stay tuned for their debut album review with us.
