Feyer’s latest EP release boasts of an eclectic mix of influences that immediately shines in the quirky music that is unlike anything you’ve heard before. Punchy, tight, and driving, yet colorful and whimsical, and proudly so, Bridging the Gaps is a quirky release that ends too soon, leaving you wanting a lot more.
New York based musician Feyer is a musician and songwriter whose rich approach to writing lyrics and creating arrangements to his songs ends up resulting in musical compositions that haphazardly flow from one to the other, basking in a sense of controlled, but utter, lack of order, courtesy of Feyer’s usage of detrimental compression on his instrumentations, beats, and synth lines. The results are endlessly vigorous and flamboyant.
Bridging the Gaps is a five-song EP with 3 instrumental interludes interjecting the cuts, titled ‘Bridge/Gap’ I-III. The bright and upbeat ‘Anything Better to Do’ used a melodic, sing-song vocal part that defines the song’s core musical content. Pit against searingly trebly instrumentation and a rocking drum performance, Feyer’s introduction capably introduces his eccentricities in a charming light. ‘Could’ve Been Pretend’ blends more sing-song vocal parts with dramatic and powerful group chants and epic howls. Particularly noteworthy is Feyer’s ability to describe daily life events and routines with his immersive lyrical contents, and how he then proceeds to blur the lines between dreamlike states and real-life using his whimsical musical leanings. Feyer’s songwriting is fresh and excitingly unusual.
After the second interlude, we have the first laidback and semi-relaxed cut on the record. ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is an acoustic guitar-driven stunner with lush synths and deep lyrics. Despite having almost no beats, the song’s rhythms are just as perceptibly upbeat as all the previous ones, even if the general tendency is more chilled. Feyer’s hymn for the weekend, ‘Working Nights and Weekends’ is slightly less lyrically than musically bombastic. Working days and weekends, Feyer’s weekends are not necessarily glamorous, a notion that a lot of us ambitious hardworking folk can get behind. Now if we could just get some sleep…
Feyer’s latest EP is a stunning, and stunningly quirky, piece of arrangement, songwriting, and production. Choosing a color, then proceeding to totally own it, Feyer exudes with confidence in his musical vision on ‘Bridging the Gap’ resulting in an endlessly tight and cohesive output that remains engaging from the very first moments to the last.
