Thorvald - The Legend of Beowulf

A few weeks ago, we gave you a review for ‘Ragnarok: The Fall of Edin’– read it here – this time we’re giving you a review for ‘The Legend of Beowulf’. This is the 4th released track by the Egyptian Viking/Folk Death Metal band Thorvald from their first full-length album, Blood Eagle. Thorvald recently developed their musical atmosphere with using clean vocals. The band was formed in 2013 in Alexandria and its members are Ahmad Mostafa(Composition, Guitars, Lyrics and Bass), Rami Muhammed (Guitars, Drums and Programming), Saif El Shazly (Vocals and Lyrics), and Omar El Wallie (Guitars). ‘The Legend of Beowulf’ features Thorvald's new Guitarist, Omar Wallie.

Evidently, this piece is a unique one because it is taken from the Anglo-Saxon legacy. If you are interested in English Literature, you know well what Beowulf is, but if you don't know, it is the first epic in English Literature.


Let's move to the track.
The track starts with heavy tunes and the style of the track is close to Thorvald's previous track ‘Rangarok: The Fall of Oudin’. You can taste the epic/poetic atmosphere in the tunes of the guitars and the beats of the drums. In 1:22, the riffs turn to be deeper and harder. Clean vocals techniques are the main tool for Thorvald's version of Beowulf. The variety of pitches, the open spaces of vocals are well employed through the track. Lately, the scene contains a few good clean vocals so a new and good clean vocalist now joins the scene, and that is Saif El Shazly. Thorvald still employs the instrumental melodic parts to move from phase to phase through the track. The solo in 4:11 to 4:58 is well-executed, it is really attractive and deep. The only problem is the matter of sound quality. In some parts of the track, the sounds of the guitar are higher than the vocals and in other parts the vocals are too loud and they are close to noise. Regarding the solo part, the sounds of the guitars are very high.
